Did you know... 🤔

A note from Michelle...

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, so he's predicting six more weeks of winter.

I hope his prediction is wrong, because I'm ready to thaw out. A few weeks ago, we had about an inch of snow, then about a half inch of ice with another inch of snow on top of that. Last weekend, we had about five inches of snow, which was beautiful. But now I'm ready for spring!

How about you? Did you get any snow or ice?

After two full days of snow, there was such a peaceful feeling all around.

The snowdrifts the next morning were beautiful! My front yard looked like a white sandy beach.

Business Update

My proofreading rates will increase on March 1, 2026, from $0.20 per word to $0.25 per word.

If you have a book in progress and are considering hiring a proofreader, you can lock in the $0.20 rate by booking with me this month. Your manuscript does not need to be finished yet—simply reserve your spot on my calendar for the month you plan to book your project to secure the lower rate.

Did you know there is a difference between marketing and promotion?

The words "marketing" and "promotion" are often used interchangeably. However, they don't actually mean the same thing.

Marketing is the long-term work you do to build trust and awareness around who you are as an author. It shapes how readers see you. Marketing continues even when you don’t have a new book coming out. It includes your

  • brand
  • website
  • email list
  • content
  • how you show up for your audience

Promotion is short-term and focused on a specific goal. It is designed to create urgency and encourage readers to take action, such as:

  • buying your latest book
  • signing up for an event
  • grabbing a limited-time offer

Now that you know and understand the difference between the two words, take a minute to read my blog post that dives deeper. I share examples and tips to help differentiate between the two and how you can use marketing and promotion together effectively.

Tip: The two work best when they support each other!

What I'm Reading This Month

I am a member of The Freelance Editors Club, and every month we read a book for our book club. This month, we're reading Deep Work by Cal Newport.

I haven't read enough to form an opinion yet, but so far my favorite quote is: "Deep work is necessary to wring every last drop of value out of your current intellectual capacity" (p. 5).

Here's what Goodreads says about the book:

In Deep Work, author and professor Cal Newport flips the narrative on impact in a connected age. Instead of arguing that distraction is bad, he instead celebrates the power of its opposite. Dividing this book into two parts, he first makes the case that in almost any profession, cultivating a deep work ethic will produce massive benefits. He then presents a rigorous training regimen, presented as a series of four "rules," for transforming your mind and habits to support this skill.

What are you reading this month? I'm always looking for books to add to my reading list.

Until next time!

Blessings,
