Small, Practical Book Marketing Tips

The Last Edit - tips and advice for authors

Issue 016

A note from Michelle...

Happy 2026!

Did you have a nice Christmas? I sure hope so! Ours was nice. My step-son and his wife flew in from Japan to spend a week with us. He's in the Air Force and only gets vacations at the end of the year. And with the high cost of everything, we only get to see them every other year. So it was really nice to be able to spend time with them this year. We went to see Christmas lights, spent time talking around the kitchen table, and had Christmas dinner and presents a few nights before Christmas Eve, before they had to leave.

On Christmas Eve, we had Christmas dinner and presents with my parents, which is always so much fun. Christmas Day was a day full of laziness and time spent together, after opening our presents at home. I enjoyed the time to calm down and relax for a little while.

Now I'm back to work and enjoying proofreading an Amish fiction novel for Barbour Publishing. It's such a good book! While I needed the break, I'm so happy to be back to work. I absolutely love what I do!

Speaking of work, I'm considering giving myself a much-needed raise this year. Which means I'll be raising my rates soon. If you're looking for a proofreader, now is the time to get on my calendar and lock in the current rate before it increases in March.

On the Blog

December's theme was all about marketing for authors. I wanted to share a few small, yet practical marketing tips with you that I've learned from authors over the years.

The best marketing tips focus on consistency. And small habits work because they are

  • repeatable
  • lightweight
  • relationship-centered
  • momentum-building

Here are some habits that you can start working on this year:

Daily Habits (5-10 minutes)

  1. Engage with 3-5 posts from readers or fellow writers.
  2. Share a brief behind-the-scenes update.
  3. Respond to comments or messages.
  4. Save content ideas as you see them.

Weekly Habits (15-30 minutes)

  1. Publish one helpful post
  2. Send one email to your newsletter list.
  3. Invite new people into your author world.
  4. Track one metric.

How do you build these habits into your routine? Easy! Just start small!

  • Pick one daily habit.
  • Pick one weekly habit.
  • Repeat consistently for a month.
  • Build on them as you go!

What I'm Reading This Month

I love to read before I go to bed at night because it relaxes me. However, this book is keeping me awake! I don't want to put it down because I have to find out what happens next! What was the last book you read that kept you turning the pages?

Here's what Goodreads says about the book:

THEN
She was fifteen, her mother's golden girl. She had her whole life ahead of her. And then, in the blink of an eye, Ellie was gone.

NOW
It’s been ten years since Ellie disappeared, but Laurel has never given up hope of finding her daughter.

And then one day a charming and charismatic stranger called Floyd walks into a café and sweeps Laurel off her feet.

Before too long she’s staying the night at this house and being introduced to his nine year old daughter.

Poppy is precocious and pretty - and meeting her completely takes Laurel's breath away.

Because Poppy is the spitting image of Ellie when she was that age. And now all those unanswered questions that have haunted Laurel come flooding back.

What happened to Ellie? Where did she go?

Who still has secrets to hide?

What are you reading this month? I'm always looking for books to add to my reading list.

Until next time!

Blessings,
